Early History 1945-1969:

Sam Walton, a businessman and former J. C. Penney employee, purchased a Ben Franklin store from the Butler Brothers in 1945. His main goal was to sell low-cost products in large quantities at a low profit margin, portraying it as a crusade for the consumer. He had setbacks due to the unusually high lease price and branch purchase, but he was able to find lower-cost suppliers than those used by other stores, allowing him to undercut his competitors on pricing.

Sales increased by 45 percent to US$105,000 in his first year of ownership, then increased to $140,000 the following year and $175,000 the year after that. Within five years, the store had made a profit of $250,000. When the lease for the location expired and Walton was unable to reach an agreement, he opened a new store at 105 N. Main Street in Bentonville, which he named "Walton's Five and Dime." The Walmart Museum is now housed in that store.

Environmental Initiatives

Walmart announced several environmental initiatives in November 2005 to improve energy efficiency and its overall environmental record, which had previously been lacking. Walmart's primary objectives included spending $500 million per year to improve fuel efficiency in its truck fleet by 25% in three years and doubling it in ten; reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% in seven years; reduce energy use in stores by 30%; and reduce solid waste from US stores and Sam's Clubs by 25% in three years.

Other Projects

• Three new experimental stores with wind turbines, photovoltaic solar panels, biofuel-capable boilers, water-cooled refrigerators, and xeriscaping gardens were also designed by the company.
• Walmart also became the world's largest seller of organic milk and buyer of organic cotton during this time, all while lowering packaging and energy costs.
• In 2007, the company enlisted the help of outside consultants to assess its overall environmental impact and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Walmart established its own electric company in Texas, Texas Retail Energy, with the intention of supplying its stores with low-cost wholesale power. The company expects to save $15 million per year as a result of this new venture, as well as lay the groundwork and infrastructure to sell electricity to Texas consumers in the future.

Growth and Development

Due to a large part of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, including store closures, limited store occupancy, and employment, as well as social distancing protocols, this decade began very unconventionally and unusually, as did many other companies.

Walmart changed some of its employee benefits in March 2020 as a result of the pandemic. If employees are unable to work or are uncomfortable coming to work, they can now choose to stay at home and take unpaid leave. Employees at Walmart who contract the virus will also receive "up to two weeks of pay." Hourly associates who are unable to return to work after two weeks are eligible for up to 26 weeks of pay.

Policy Addition

Walmart launched Carrier Pickup, a new service in December 2020 that allows customers to schedule a return for a product purchased online, in-store, or from a third-party vendor. These services can be accessed through the Walmart App or the company's website.

Walmart announced in January 2021 that it is partnering with Ribbit Capital to launch a fintech startup that will provide financial products to consumers and employees.

Walmart acquired Thunder Industries' technology, which uses automation to create digital ads, in February 2021 to expand its online marketing capabilities.

Walmart announced in August 2021 that it would make its Spark crowdsourcing delivery service available to other businesses as a white-label service, competing with Postmates and other online food ordering delivery services.
